The picturesque city of Siegburg, Germany, is on the cusp of a significant transformation. With the planned opening of a new Merkur Casino by autumn 2026, the city anticipates a wave of economic and social benefits that could redefine its future.
A groundbreaking development:
The recent groundbreaking event unveiled the grand plans for the Merkur Casino, situated on the periphery of Siegburg. This expansive facility, encompassing 1,600 square meters, will host 250 slot machines and a variety of gaming tables. According to WDR, David Schnabel, a board member for Casinos at the Merkur Group, described the initiative as “extraordinary and historic,” emphasizing their intention to integrate deeply into the local fabric.
Merkur has allocated a substantial investment of €35 million towards the construction of what aims to be Germany’s most modern casino. Mayor Stefan Rosemann highlighted the project’s potential to alter the city’s economic landscape, drawing a parallel to transformative developments from Siegburg’s past. “Just as pivotal businesses have shaped our city center, so will the casino redefine our commercial outskirts,” Rosemann stated. The casino is expected to generate approximately five million euros annually from concession fees alone, a significant boost to the city’s current revenue from trade taxes.
The project is predicted to directly create 100 new jobs within the casino, with additional employment opportunities arising indirectly through increased tourism and service demands. “These are not merely jobs; they’re careers offering stability and growth in our community,” noted Rosemann. The influx of visitors, estimated at 157,000 in the first year, is also expected to inject around two million euros annually into the local economy, benefiting sectors such as retail, hospitality, and services.
Commitment to sustainability and community:
In line with contemporary environmental standards, the casino will feature a state-of-the-art photovoltaic system to meet its energy needs sustainably. The architectural design includes green initiatives such as a landscaped façade and an orchard on the premises, demonstrating Merkur’s commitment to sustainability.
The casino will not only focus on gaming but also become a venue for major cultural and social events. The groundbreaking ceremony featured a taste of the future entertainment, with performances and appearances by notable personalities like presenter Amira Aly, which underscored the casino’s role as a forthcoming cultural hub.
While the development has been met with enthusiasm, there have been concerns regarding the potential for gambling addiction and environmental impact, especially near the Agger River. The city and developers have responded by revising their plans to alleviate environmental concerns and emphasizing addiction prevention programs.
Mayor Rosemann and the Merkur Group are confident that the casino will offer more than just gaming—it will serve as a catalyst for economic growth and a beacon for responsible entertainment in Siegburg. “We are setting the stage for a prosperous future that respects both our heritage and our environment,” Schnabel concluded.
